‎Ipswich Town condemn racist abuse targeting Abdul Fatawu after Everton defeat

‎Ipswich Town have strongly condemned racist abuse directed at Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku on social media following the club’s 1–0 Premier League defeat to Everton on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

‎The 22-year-old was sent off during the match after receiving a second yellow card, leaving Ipswich to finish the game with 10 players.
‎
‎Shortly after the dismissal, Issahaku became the target of racist abuse on social media, prompting the club to issue a strong response and pledge its support for the Ghanaian international.
‎
‎In a statement, Ipswich Town said it was investigating the incident in collaboration with the Premier League and relevant authorities.
‎
‎“Ipswich Town Football Club is aware of online racist abuse directed at Abdul Fatawu via social media.”
‎
‎“The club finds any form of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable and has no place in football.”
‎
‎“We are investigating this incident alongside the Premier League and the relevant authorities.”
‎
‎“We will continue to offer Abdul our full support.”
‎
‎The club stressed that while players can face criticism for their performances or incidents during matches, such criticism must not cross into racist or discriminatory abuse.
‎
‎Ipswich manager Gary O’Neil has also backed Issahaku following the difficult outing, with the winger’s qualities and potential continuing to be recognised despite his dismissal.
‎
‎The incident has once again highlighted concerns over racism and abuse directed at footballers through social media, particularly after controversial moments during matches.
‎
‎Ipswich’s investigation is expected to work alongside the Premier League and relevant authorities to establish those responsible for the abuse.
‎
‎For Issahaku, the focus will now be on recovering from the disappointment of the red card and defeat as he continues his development with Ipswich.
