Julius Debrah, others storm Akwatia ahead of September 2 by-election

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has stormed Akwatia in the Eastern Region to lend his support to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign ahead of next week’s crucial by-election.
His visit comes just eight days before voters head to the polls on September 2, as both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intensify their efforts to win the vacant parliamentary seat.
His presence highlights the NDC’s determination to flip a constituency traditionally considered an NPP stronghold. As part of his schedule, he met with traditional leaders and community elders before taking the campaign directly to the streets, interacting with residents and traders to promote the party’s candidate, Lawyer Benard Bediako Baidoo.
Mr. Debrah’s involvement will help energise grassroots supporters, boost voter turnout, and consolidate the NDC’s message. Known as an experienced political strategist, he is expected to play a key role in winning over undecided voters.
The by-election was triggered by the sudden death of Ernest Kumi, the NPP Member of Parliament, just six months after securing re-election during the December 2024 general elections.
For the NPP, the contest is seen as an opportunity to maintain control of a constituency they have long dominated, with party leaders framing their campaign around preserving Kumi’s legacy. On the other hand, the NDC is promising improved infrastructure, youth employment opportunities, and a stronger fight against illegal mining, a major concern in Akwatia and surrounding communities.
Mr. Debrah’s visit marks the NDC’s highest-profile intervention in the campaign so far and signals the party’s belief that the seat is winnable. Political observers say the outcome could serve as an early indicator of voter sentiment toward the governing NDC and the NPP’s strength in opposition.
The September 2 by-election is shaping up to be a closely watched contest, with both parties eager to test their campaign machinery and connect with voters in a politically strategic constituency.
