Gov’t invests over GH¢30m to boost Cultural Tourism – Ofosu Ampofo

The government has invested over GH¢30 million to boost cultural tourism in Ghana, with the disbursement coming through the Tourism Development Fund.
Officials say the initiative is designed to strengthen the creative arts and promote festivals as key drivers of economic development.
Speaking at the 61st Oguaaman Fetu Afahye in the Central Region, Policy Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, explained that the government’s GH¢30 million investment in cultural tourism was part of a deliberate strategy to reposition the sector. Representing Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, he noted that festivals must evolve into platforms that generate economic growth and empower Ghanaian creatives.
According to Dr. Ofosu Ampofo, the government’s disbursement of over GH¢30 million to boost cultural tourism reflects a commitment to both heritage and innovation. “Our tourism sector, strengthened by strategic investments through the Ghana Tourism Development Company and the Tourism Development Fund, is ensuring that festivals such as the Fetu Afahye remain cultural sanctuaries and engines of economic growth,” he stated.
He further highlighted that through the Creative Arts Agency, working with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the government is creating unprecedented opportunities for creatives to flourish. “We want them to earn sustainable livelihoods while flying high the proud flag of Ghana across the globe,” he added.
Dr. Ampofo praised the festival’s theme, “Innovate to Elevate,” describing it as in line with the government’s broader vision to reset and reposition the economy. Accompanied by the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto, and Cape Coast South MP, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, the delegation also donated food items, drinks, and an undisclosed cash amount to support the celebrations.
The Paramount Chief of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, expressed his gratitude to the government delegation, urging collective efforts toward development in Cape Coast.
Later, Dr. Ampofo assured the Central Regional Coordinating Council that the government would accelerate work on the Accra–Cape Coast road project, citing President John Dramani Mahama’s “big push” for infrastructure. Regional Minister Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere also announced plans to establish a free zone in the region to attract investment and spread opportunities beyond Accra.
