DStv succumbs to Sam George’s call for a price reduction

The pay-TV operator DStv has responded positively to calls by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, following government pressure to reduce subscription prices.
In a move aimed at resolving weeks of standoff between the ministry and MultiChoice Ghana, a joint committee has been established to determine the appropriate level of reduction for DStv subscriptions.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday, September 5, 2025, Sam Nartey George confirmed that the committee was formed at MultiChoice’s request to reach an agreement on the price reduction. The committee comprises representatives from the ministry, the regulator, NCA, MultiChoice Ghana, and MultiChoice Africa, with Mr. George personally chairing the group. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable pay-TV services while engaging the operator constructively.
“We have taken an immediate step to put together a committee comprising representatives from the ministry, the regulator, NCA, Multichoice Ghana, and Multichoice Africa. I will personally chair the committee,” he said. Mr. George explained that although MultiChoice initially requested 30 days to determine the level of reduction, the government insisted on a shorter timeframe to ensure quick action.
“Let us be clear—they have finally accepted that there will be a reduction and they want us to discuss the level of reduction. I believe that as a minister, we do not need 30 days. Fourteen days is enough, inclusive of weekends, for us to reach this decision. The committee is to present a suitable price reduction strategy to the people of Ghana,” he added.
Earlier this month, the ministry had directed the enforcement of a statutory fine of GH¢10,000 per day on MultiChoice for failing to submit the required pricing data under the Electronic Communications Act (ECA). The ministry also warned that the company risks suspension of its operating licence if prices are not reduced by September 6, 2025.
The outcome of the joint committee’s work is expected to be announced later this month. Government officials have assured Ghanaians that the process will be transparent and timely, emphasizing that the establishment of the committee reflects the government’s determination to ensure fair pricing for DStv subscribers while balancing the interests of the pay-TV operator.
