Afenyo-Markin to deliver maiden parliamentary public lecture on finding common ground

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, will deliver the first-ever Public Lecture on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
It forms part of the legislature’s efforts to deepen democratic engagement.
The initiative, organised by the Public Affairs Subdivision under the auspices of the Clerk to Parliament at the Parliament of Ghana, is designed to bring Parliament closer to the people and promote dialogue on governance.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who is also MP for Effutu, will speak on the topic, “Centre Left, Centre Right: Formulating Policies That Serve a Growing Democracy,” with a focus on centrism and the need to build consensus in policymaking.
The event will also feature remarks from the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, underscoring the bipartisan character of the programme.
By placing both Majority and Minority Leaders on the platform, organisers aim to demonstrate Parliament’s commitment to constructive engagement across political divides.
The lecture is scheduled to take place at the Justice D. F. Annan Auditorium, Parliament House, at 2:30 p.m. prompt. It is expected to attract Members of Parliament, civil society actors, students, members of the diplomatic community and the general public.
Serving as Master of Ceremonies for the event is the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, who has described the occasion as historic and a significant step in strengthening the bond between Parliament and citizens.
According to organisers, the Public Lecture series forms part of a broader outreach strategy captured under the theme “Bringing Parliament Closer to the People” and the campaign hashtag #LetsTalkMore.
The platform is expected to provide space for thoughtful, non-partisan discussions on governance, policy direction and democratic accountability.
With centrism as the focus of the maiden edition, the lecture is anticipated to explore how political actors can find common ground in addressing national challenges while safeguarding Ghana’s growing democratic culture.
