‎Arresting Salome won’t solve social media dispute – Martin Kpebu

‎Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has cautioned the Ghana Police Service against relying solely on the arrest and prosecution of social media personality Salome to resolve the ongoing dispute involving competing personalities on social media.
‎
‎According to Kpebu, the continued activities of supporters of the two main sides on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook suggest that arresting one individual will not address the wider tensions.
‎
‎Speaking on The KeyPoints on Saturday, September 19, 2026, he said Salome had indicated on several occasions that she would stop her activities if the person he described as the “protagonist” also stopped.
‎
‎“She came back and said, look, if you stop the protagonist, and we all know the protagonist, she would stop. And so that’s been it,” he said.
‎
‎Mr Kpebu said the situation had become more complicated because while the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) was holding Salome, the other side was continuing to make public statements and attacks on social media.
‎
‎“As the CID is holding Salome, at the same time, Ghana Jollof is blasting, she’s blasting and even blasting the CID themselves,” he said.
‎
‎He argued that the scale of activity on TikTok, coupled with the large following and support behind the two main contenders, required the police to look beyond simply making arrests.
‎
‎“I may not be an investigator, but we also understand this is the work that we do,” Kpebu said.
‎
‎“Considering the number of people on TikTok and the forces behind the two main contenders, you can see that this is not a matter for police to just arrest somebody, put in custody, go to court and finish.”
‎
‎Kpebu further warned that arresting Salome could trigger more people to join the dispute online, making the situation more difficult to contain.
‎
‎“The arrest is not going to solve anything. There are more people on TikTok, more of them are coming back,” he said.
‎
‎He therefore maintained that unless action was also taken to address the conduct of the other side of the dispute, the arrest of Salome alone would not resolve the matter.
‎
‎“So arresting Salome, no, you’ve not solved the problem as long as the protagonist is not reined in. You haven’t done anything. No, no, no,” he stressed.
