Upper East Police kill three suspected robbers, recover guns, stolen motorbikes

‎The Upper East Regional Police Command has dismantled a notorious robbery gang linked to a series of attacks on motorbike riders and mobile money vendors across several communities in the region.
‎
‎The gang is believed to have been operating in Benaba, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, Zebilla and surrounding areas.
‎
‎The breakthrough came when police personnel, together with some of the suspects, proceeded to the Tilly Forest after the suspects identified the location where their weapons had allegedly been concealed.
‎
‎Upon reaching the area, the police team came under heavy gunfire, resulting in injuries to three suspects identified as 33-year-old Amadu Apiiga, Philip Vokbilla and Bilal Adabode, alias Sulley, who had led the police to the location.
‎
‎The three were subsequently rushed to a hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
‎
‎Other individuals believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire reportedly fled the scene.
‎
‎Two police officers were also injured and are currently receiving medical attention.
‎
‎The suspects have further been linked to the killing of a police officer during a robbery attack at Zebilla on February 8, 2026.
‎
‎Items recovered during the operation include two locally manufactured single-barrel guns, two pistols, including a BRUNI 92 pistol with 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and 18 BB live cartridges.
‎
‎Police also retrieved three sharp cutlasses, four unregistered Yamaha Aerox scooters, a pair of black boots, a motorbike number plate and two mobile phones.
‎
‎The Police Command is appealing to the public to report anyone found with gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.
‎
‎Six other members of the gang who were previously arrested remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
‎
‎Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the remaining members of the gang and trace the source of the weapons.
