Asake appeals to Mahama for clemency over Cyborg’s celebratory gunfire

Nigerian musician Asake has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama for clemency following the arrest of socialite Cyborg over celebratory gunfire that went viral in Accra.
The appeal came during a brief interaction between the Afrobeats star and the President, where Asake raised the issue lightly but directly, drawing laughter from those present. “Sir, I heard he has been arrested. He didn’t do it because of me. Let me just say we were all happy,” Asake told President Mahama.
President Mahama responded in a relaxed, humorous tone, saying, “Don’t worry about it,” before adding, to further laughter in the room, “the law is the law.” The exchange ended with the President and the musician posing for photographs together.
The President had earlier introduced the subject himself, recalling the viral footage and jokingly asking, “So he is the one the guy fired the gun for?”—a remark that set the tone for the light-hearted but pointed conversation.
The interaction follows the arrest of Abubakari Sedick, popularly known as “Cyborg,” after a video circulated online showing him firing multiple shots into the air at a public event at the El-Wak Stadium on December 28, 2025, shortly after meeting the Nigerian artist.
In a statement issued by the Criminal Investigation Department, the Ghana Police Service said its Cyber Vetting Team identified and arrested the suspect on December 29 at Adenta.
“The suspect, identified as Abubakari Sedick, popularly known as ‘Cyborg,’ was arrested for possession and discharge of a firearm,” the statement said.
Police confirmed that a Derya MK-12 firearm with registration number 22-GHA 1162 was retrieved and secured as evidence.
“The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and will be put before the court to face justice,” the CID noted.
The Police Service cautioned the public that firearm ownership comes with strict limits. “Possessing a registered firearm does not give the holder the right to discharge it indiscriminately,” the statement warned, adding that licences can be revoked and offenders charged.
