Fighting corruption demands resilience and integrity – Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has stressed that fighting corruption requires resilience, integrity and sacrifice, warning that reformers often face isolation and resistance.
Mr. Bagbin made the remarks at the National Development Conference 2026 in Gomoa Fetteh, at the Pentecost Convention Center (PCC), where he addressed participants on the importance of moral values, ethical leadership and national development.
He described corruption as one of the greatest obstacles to Ghana’s progress and called for a renewed commitment to integrity.
“Fighting corruption is not a solo business, but you will end up being isolated,” he said. “When you decide to stand for accountability and transparency, you should be prepared for opposition from those who benefit from the system.”
According to the Speaker, corruption continues to undermine public trust in institutions and weakens efforts aimed at promoting development and good governance. He stressed that the battle against corruption goes beyond enforcing laws and prosecuting offenders.
Mr. Bagbin argued that lasting success in the fight against corruption can only be achieved when citizens and leaders embrace honesty, accountability and strong moral values. He called on public office holders to demonstrate integrity in the discharge of their duties.
“Resilience and integrity are essential if we are to overcome corruption,” he stated. “Without ethical leadership and responsible citizenship, our efforts to build a better society will be difficult.”
The Speaker further urged Ghanaians to support individuals and institutions working to promote transparency and accountability.
He said corruption thrives when people remain silent in the face of wrongdoing and stressed the need for citizens to play an active role in safeguarding public resources.
He also called for stronger collaboration among state institutions, civil society organisations and the private sector to tackle corruption effectively.
According to him, a united national effort is needed to address the root causes of corruption and strengthen confidence in public institutions.
“We cannot build a prosperous nation without strong values,” Mr. Bagbin said, emphasizing that national development should be measured not only by infrastructure but also by the character and integrity of the people.
His comments have renewed discussions about Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts, with many observers highlighting the personal and professional risks often associated with exposing wrongdoing and demanding accountability.
