Ghanaians want Mahama to seek third term – Mahama Ayariga

Majority Leader and MP for Bawku-Central, Mahama Ayariga on Friday said citizens are calling on President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term, citing his excellent performance in office.
In his concluding remarks as Parliament rose for the year, Ayariga noted that Ghanaians have expressed their desire for Mahama to continue in the presidency through social media discussions, public conversations, and general observations.
“I know that because I read on social media, I listen to conversations, and as a result of the good deeds of President Mahama, people don’t want him to leave the presidency. They believe a third term is possible and they are demanding it,” he said.
However, Ayariga emphasized that President Mahama has not indicated any intention to pursue a third term. He stressed that the ultimate decision rests with Ghanaians.
“John Dramani Mahama has not given any indication that he wants to go for a third term, but I have always said Ghanaians will be the ultimate deciders of the future of this country,” the Majority Leader added.
It should be noted that the president made clear in Singapore that he would not seek a third term.
General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Fifi Kwetey, has also indicated that the party will not aspire to support a third term for an incumbent.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 16, which was monitored by today.com.gh, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said the party remains firmly committed to Ghana’s constitutional framework and would not support any attempt to amend the Constitution to extend presidential tenure.
According to Mr Kwetey, Ghana has earned respect across sub-Saharan Africa for its peaceful democratic transitions and strict adherence to constitutional limits, a legacy the NDC is determined to protect.
He stressed that neither the party nor President Mahama would entertain any action that undermines the Constitution, noting that the President has already taken steps to shut down conversations around a third-term agenda.
