Ignore announced 20% transport fare increase – Operators to public

Road transport operators have urged commuters to disregard reports of a 20 percent increase in public transport fares, stating that no such adjustment has been approved through the established process.

The statement was signed by General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Godfred Abulbire, and General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, on behalf of road transport operators.

The clarification follows widespread media reports indicating that the GPRTU was preparing to increase transport fares effective June 2, 2026.

The reports generated concern among commuters who anticipated higher transport costs at the beginning of the month.

However, the transport operators said they had not engaged the Ministry of Transport on any upward review of fares and described the reported adjustment as unauthorized.

“We wish to inform the general public that, the Executives of the Road Transport Operators have not engaged the Ministry in any transport fare upward adjustment,” the statement said.

According to the operators, any fare review must follow an agreed protocol between transport unions and the Ministry of Transport before implementation.

“The decision by the supposed group is illegal as it has not gone through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Operators,” the statement added.

The operators strongly distanced themselves from the reported increase and called on the public not to be misled by the announcement.

“We therefore wish to condemn this decision in no uncertain terms and request the general public to disregard the publication by the supposed group with the contempt it deserves,” the statement noted.

Road transport unions, drivers, vehicle owners and loading point managers have also been directed to maintain existing fares until any official review is announced.

“Accordingly, all road transport operators, unions, associations, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers, and allied stakeholders are hereby requested to maintain the existing approved fares and to refrain from implementing any unilateral fare adjustments until further notice,” the statement said.

The operators indicated that they are monitoring the next pricing window and would communicate any future fare adjustment through the appropriate channels.

“We are monitoring the next pricing window and should there be the need for any fare adjustment, the public will be duly notified,” the statement added.
