Jerry Ahmed calls for a medical support for Ali Jarrah 

The story of Ali Jarrah, once hailed as one of Ghana’s brightest footballing prospects, has returned to the national spotlight after decades of painful obscurity.

A statement delivered in Parliament by Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, has rekindled public concern over the tragic decline of the former national goalkeeper, whose dreams were shattered by a career-ending injury more than 30 years ago.

Jarrah was a household name in the early 1990s, celebrated for his heroics between the posts. He played a key role in Ghana’s historic FIFA U-17 World Cup victory in 1991, and helped the Black Satellites win silver at the 1993 U-20 World Cup in Japan. His exploits caught the attention of major European clubs including Liverpool FC and FC Köln.

However, during a Super Clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in 1993, Jarrah suffered a spinal injury that left him permanently paralyzed. With that one moment, a promising career came to a halt—and state support, according to Shaib, never followed.

“For over 30 years, Ali Jarrah has faced life with courage, but without the institutional backing he deserves,” the MP said. “He gave everything. And Ghana gave him nothing.”

Despite the adversity, Jarrah did not give up. He established a chalk production business, using it as a means of survival. Yet for years, his story remained largely unknown—until Hon. Shaib’s speech stirred public emotion and debate over how Ghana treats its injured sports heroes.

There are now renewed calls for formal recognition, compensation, and support, including from members of the sporting community and civil society.
