Kennedy Agyapong declares intention to contest NPP presidential primaries

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has announced his decision to contest in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Primaries.
The announcement was made in an official statement posted on his Facebook page on Monday afternoon.
In the statement, the former Assin Central MP noted that he had called into his television and radio stations — Net2 TV and Oman FM — to formally declare his intentions following the party’s release of the nomination schedule. “Now that nominations have been opened, I will be contesting for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 Presidential Primaries,” he stated.
Mr. Agyapong expressed gratitude for the wide support he has received from across the country and within various sectors. “What brings me the greatest joy is the overwhelming love and support pouring in from every corner of the country. It’s not just from within our party, but across age groups and sectors, young people, professionals and even Members of Parliament,” he said. “Many have reached out, offering to personally cover the cost of my nomination forms.”
Describing his candidacy as a collective mission rather than a personal ambition, Agyapong pledged to lead with integrity and purpose. “Together, we will rise above partisanship, unite across regions, and build a Ghana where every citizen, young or old, rich or poor, has a fair shot at success. I am ready to listen to you and to lead with integrity and purpose. Let us move forward together.”
His campaign is expected to focus on themes of internal renewal, discipline, credibility, and issue-based politics — ideals he believes are needed both within the party and in national governance.
This will be Agyapong’s second attempt at the NPP’s top ticket. He was placed second to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the previous presidential primaries.
Although Bawumia went on to lead the party into the 2024 general elections, he was defeated by former President John Dramani Mahama, who won the presidency.
Mr. Ken Agyapong served as the Member of Parliament for Assin Central for 24 years, from 2001 to 2025. Over the years, he has earned a reputation as a fierce debater, a strong voice for anti-corruption, and a champion of grassroots accountability within the NPP.
Mr. Agyapong, in his statement, ended by sending a birthday message to the General Manager of the Kencity Group and his Communications Director, Lawyer Kwaku Amoh-Darteh. “I take this opportunity to wish him a very happy birthday and thank him and every member of the team for the incredible work you continue to do. God bless you!”
The New Patriotic Party officially opened nominations for presidential hopefuls on July 29. Aspirants are required to submit their forms by August 28, 2025, along with a non-refundable filing fee of GHS100,000. The party has set January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries.
