Kufuor’s belated comments confirm tough times under NPP – Ako Gunn

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has observed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s recent public reflections prove that Ghanaians endured hardship and mismanagement under the Akufo-Addo administration.
In a statement issued by Deputy National Communication Officer Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC argued that Kufuor’s own testimony “removes all doubt” about the quality of leadership the New Patriotic Party offered over the last eight years.
The former president, speaking in an interview on the Delay Show, admitted that several policies and decisions taken by his party’s administration were actions he “didn’t understand,” prompting the NDC to describe his remarks as “a long-overdue confirmation of the realities Ghanaians lived through.”
The party emphasized that Kufuor’s disclosures about being sidelined in key matters were particularly telling.
“President Kufuor has openly revealed that he was not consulted on major national decisions, including the National Cathedral project, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme and the PDS controversy,” the statement noted.
It added that these decisions brought “severe hardship to pensioners, investors and ordinary households,” and that Kufuor’s own words now “expose the inward-looking and arrogant posture of the Akufo-Addo government.”
According to the NDC, the former president’s reflections also validate concerns the party raised throughout the NPP’s tenure.
“We consistently warned that the NPP had abandoned prudence, embraced unilateralism and shut out collective wisdom,” the statement said. “Kufuor’s admission that the party rode on his achievements in 2016 only to depart from responsible governance is further proof of the failures that burdened Ghanaians.”
However, the party questioned why Kufuor waited until after the NPP’s electoral defeat before speaking publicly.
“His long silence during the years of reckless decision-making contributed to the suffering of citizens,” the statement argued.
It added that while his honesty is welcome, “the timing raises legitimate concerns about why he withheld these truths when Ghanaians needed his voice most.”
The NDC insisted that the comments strengthen the case that the NPP “betrayed the trust of the people and mismanaged the country’s resources.”
It stressed that leadership must prioritise citizens over “vanity projects and narrow partisan interests,” saying its own approach remains rooted in accountability, consultation and prudent national management.
“We urge Ghanaians to pay close attention to these revelations from within the NPP’s own ranks,” the party concluded, adding that Kufuor’s belated remarks “confirm the tough times the country endured under his party’s watch.”
