Mahama embarks on a working visit to Kenya and Nigeria

President John Dramani Mahama has departed Ghana for a two-nation working visit to Kenya and Nigeria, in line with Ghana’s diplomatic engagements and obligations within the sub-region.
In an official communication dated December 10, 2025, and addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, the President notified the Legislature of his travel arrangements, as required under Article 59 of the 1992 Constitution. The letter, read in Parliament by the First Deputy Speaker and MP for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, outlined the President’s itinerary and the constitutional provisions guiding his temporary absence from the country.
According to the communication, President Mahama will participate in the Nairobi Day celebration in Kenya on Friday, an event that brings together international partners, government leaders, and development stakeholders. After the engagements in Nairobi, he will proceed to Abuja, Nigeria, where he is scheduled to attend the 68th Ordinary Summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
The ECOWAS Summit will convene heads of state from across West Africa to discuss critical political, economic, and security issues affecting the sub-region, including democratic governance, regional cooperation, and collective security responses. The meetings are expected to shape policy directions and strengthen multilateral cooperation among member states.
President Mahama is expected to return to Ghana on Monday, December 15, 2025. The President assured Parliament that governance will continue smoothly in his absence, stating: “I am expected to return to Ghana on 15th December, 2025. In my absence, the Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang shall perform my functions in accordance with Article 68 of the Constitution.”
The letter was also copied to key state institutions and office holders in line with established governmental protocol, ensuring transparency and compliance with constitutional procedures.
His participation in the ECOWAS Summit is expected to contribute to ongoing discussions aimed at enhancing regional stability, boosting economic integration, and improving collaborative governance in West Africa.
