Ministry of Interior urges police service to empower female officers

The Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior, Mrs. Doreen Annan, has called on the leadership of the Ghana Police Service to support initiatives that empower women. She urged female officers to take on leadership roles, mentor colleagues, and influence positive change within the service.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Police Ladies Association (POLAS) Headquarters Chapter, Mrs. Annan described the event as a landmark moment in POLAS’s history.
“This is not just a new beginning; it is a strong declaration that women in the Police Service are ready to lead, support each other and contribute meaningfully to the institution’s growth,” she stated.
She acknowledged challenges female officers face, including limited access to professional development opportunities, and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and gender equity through ongoing reforms.
Mrs. Annan encouraged the new chapter to nurture a culture of mentorship, proactive problem-solving, and collaboration among women officers. She also urged the Ghana Police Service leadership to support initiatives that strengthen female officers’ roles and called on male colleagues to act as allies in fostering a balanced and equitable service culture.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yuhonu, underscored the importance of empowering women within the Police Service. He praised female officers who have excelled in local and international sports competitions, highlighting their contributions to the service’s image and morale.
The National President of POLAS, COP Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, said the chapter was created in response to the growing number of women at the headquarters. She explained that the executives are tasked with managing daily activities and providing a platform for policewomen to support one another, share experiences, and grow professionally.
“We are grateful to the Inspector-General of Police for his continuous support, which has been instrumental in the growth and development of women in the service,” COP Mrs. Addo-Danquah said.
The launch of the POLAS Headquarters Chapter marks a significant step in building a united, professional, and empowered network of women in the Ghana Police Service, reinforcing the Ministry of the Interior’s vision for inclusivity and gender equity in law enforcement.
