NPP distances itself from death threats targeting Mahama, Lordina

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly distanced itself from the recent death threats aimed at President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama, insisting that the party has no involvement in the alarming online messages circulating on social media.
Speaking during a meeting with leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah stressed that the party “knows nothing” about the viral threats and would never condone such behaviour.
“Indeed, there are certain comments that are made by foot soldiers or even people who are not close to the party. But when such unfortunate, condemnable statements are made, it is important for the leadership to distance ourselves and make it clear that this is not the character of our party,” Koduah emphasised.
He highlighted that similar inflammatory remarks have emerged from members associated with both major political parties, warning that such statements are damaging to Ghana’s democratic culture.
“Some are claiming that the NPP is behind it, and some are even saying they expected other people to die. These things are not healthy for our democracy. Death is something that shouldn’t be wished for your worst enemy. So, if anything came from our side, on behalf of the party, we apologise to the NDC through you to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is not the position of the New Patriotic Party, and we never condone such activity,” Koduah added.
The NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, described the threats as troubling and called for a swift end to the cycle of threats and counter-threats, particularly among politically active youth.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has intensified investigations into the viral TikTok video that sparked the controversy, resulting in the arrest of two suspects, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, who are now assisting authorities with their inquiries. Ofori has been granted bail of GHS100,000 with sureties, while efforts continue to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in producing and circulating the video.
Both parties reiterated their commitment to upholding democratic values and fostering peaceful political engagement in the country.
