NPP to expel Prof Frimpong Boateng over ‘fake party’ comment

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun processes to expel Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng following comments describing the party as “fake” and questioning its internal democratic practices.
In a statement issued on January 13, 2026, the party said it had taken “due notice of comments made by Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng during an interview on Channel One TV,” where he described the NPP as a “fake party” and said he no longer considers himself a member.
The statement said the former Environment, Science and Technology Minister made “additional disparaging remarks” and alleged that the party’s 2023 presidential primary was rigged in favour of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate.
The party “unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong Boateng’s unfortunate characterisation of the NPP” and “firmly denies his baseless and unsubstantiated allegations regarding the conduct of the 2023 Presidential Primary.”
According to the NPP, the primary was “conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner, faithfully reflecting the will of party delegates,” a process it said had been acknowledged by all candidates who participated.
The statement described Prof Frimpong Boateng’s conduct and utterances as “highly reprehensible and inimical to the values, unity, and integrity of the Party,” adding that his comments violate provisions of the party’s constitution.
“Consequently, the Party has invoked the relevant provisions of its Constitution to commence the necessary processes to expel him from the Party, strictly in accordance with due process,” the statement, signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, said.
Prof Frimpong Boateng, in his interview on Channel One TV’s Point of View, said the party he once belonged to no longer exists.
“The present NPP is not real, it’s fake. What I see now is not the NPP I used to know,” he said.
Pressed on whether he still considers himself a member, he replied, “Not the fake one. The real one is there. It’s a virtual thing.”
He also criticised the process that produced the party’s last flag bearer, alleging intimidation and manipulation.
“Twist people’s arms, intimidating others to get a flag bearer. This is the beginning of corruption and this should not be allowed in any serious party,” he said.
Warning about the party’s future, Prof Frimpong Boateng said the NPP risks another defeat if it fails to reflect on its 2024 loss.
“I think it will be a trainwreck if they elect the old flag bearer,” he added, in a veiled reference to renewed support for Dr Bawumia.
