Plea Bargain: Adverse implications on citizens trust on justice delivery – CMD

CAUCUS FOR MATURE DEMOCRATS (CMD)
PRESS RELEASE
TO ALL MEDIA HOUSES
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THURSDAY 16 AUGUST 2025
PLEA BARGAIN LAW AND THE ADVERSE IMPLICATIONS ON CITIZENS TRUST ON JUSTICE DELIVERY.
The Caucus For Mature Democrats’ information gathered on the grounds of the entire country is that the citizens are never enthused or happy with the use of plea bargains under our circumstances today. Citizens are of the view that more punitive laws must be applied in support of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) agenda instead of softening the stance of the law just because we are eager to have our stolen or looted resources recovered.
For instance many are of the view that, issues like the urgent return of our former minister of finance, dishonourable ken ofori atta to face justice, the Akunta Mining Company of the NPP Ashanti regional chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the NSS ghost names scandal, The Skytrain scandal, the huge money found under the bed of Cecilia Dapaah among others are never to be toyed with.
Joking with such serious corruption and state-stealing issues have DIRE implications on judicial trust and national security complications. CMD wants to place on record that a debt-distressed and junk economy crying for recovery can not support a plea bargain.
Citizens in various regions around the country are NOT ACCEPTING any plea bargain whatsoever, they said. We believe that Culprits must be arrested, arraigned before the court, prosecuted, culpable ones jailed, monies retrieved, and personal assets confiscated by the state. That, in our view, is the honest law. We won’t accept any wagadrill plea bargain law, says the citizens, including CMD.
In all this, CMD fully supports the views of the Constituents or the citizens and urges the Attorney General, Honourable Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, and H.E. President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government, which is believed to be the listening and selfless serving government, to act with wisdom and tact to save our democracy and peace. We can not pretend to be fighting corruption while we allow the vampires of corruption to be let off the hook simply because they are paying back or prepared to pay back.
The idea of stealing was conceived in the minds far ahead of the act, which should never have arisen in the first place. The intention to steal has long been established.
In conclusion, since the law is still the law, we expect the president and his government to help confiscate all assets acquired criminally by citizens to the state to serve as a deterrent to criminals and thieves who have the mindset to tread on such criminal routes in the future. The time to act is now!
