Police arrest gang leader behind deadly Berekum Chelsea bus attack

Police have arrested the alleged gang leader behind the robbery attack on Berekum Chelsea’s team bus that resulted in the death of a player.

The Ghana Police Service announced the development on Thursday via a social media update, confirming that one other suspect has also been apprehended in connection with the incident.

“Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident that led to the death of a Berekum Chelsea footballer,” the statement said.

According to the Police, one of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with officers during the operation.

“One of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with the police intelligence teams and has been conveyed to the hospital for medical attention,” the statement added.

The Police indicated that further details will be communicated as investigations progress.

The arrests come in the wake of a deadly attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus, which claimed the life of 20-year-old player Dominic Frimpong.

The club confirmed that the incident occurred while the team was returning from a league fixture in Samreboi.

In an earlier statement, Berekum Chelsea detailed how the attack unfolded, explaining that the bus was ambushed by armed robbers who blocked the road before opening fire.

“On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage,” the club said.

The club added that the attackers, armed with guns and assault rifles, began shooting as the driver attempted to escape the scene.

“Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover,” the statement noted.

Frimpong sustained critical injuries during the attack and was rushed to a nearby health facility but later died from his gunshot wounds.

The incident has triggered widespread reactions within Ghana’s football fraternity, with tributes pouring in for the young player.

Berekum Chelsea also expressed appreciation to the police patrol team for its swift response and to residents of Ashiresu who provided temporary shelter for the team.

The club further acknowledged the support of officials of Bibiani Gold Stars and the President of the Ghana Football Association.

Police say investigations remain ongoing as efforts continue to track down other members of the robbery gang.
