Police foil robbery on Tutuka-Akrofuom road
Police in the Obuasi East Municipality have disrupted an attempted highway robbery on the Tutuka-Akrofuom road, arresting one suspect and retrieving key items used by the attackers.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 1, 2025, after the Obuasi Divisional Police Command received a distress call at approximately 12:15 a.m., reporting that a group of armed men had mounted a roadblock and were attacking vehicles along the stretch.
Responding swiftly, a night patrol team was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers encountered more than five suspected robbers, who immediately took to their heels into the nearby bush, abandoning two unregistered motorbikes and a machete by the roadside.
One of the suspects, identified as 18-year-old Pascal Yenkye, was arrested after a dramatic encounter. According to the police, Yenkye attempted to escape the scene by riding a motorbike directly toward the patrol vehicle at high speed. Officers responded by shooting him in the left leg, causing him to crash and fall off the bike.
He was promptly taken to the Obuasi Government Hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment under armed guard.
The police say investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to track down the other suspects who managed to flee. The retrieved motorbikes and machete have been taken in as evidence to aid the probe.
Authorities have assured residents of Obuasi and surrounding areas that security has been intensified, especially along known high-risk routes.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of commuters and will not relent in our efforts to clamp down on criminal activity in this municipality,” a police spokesperson stated.
Residents have praised the quick response by the patrol team, urging continued vigilance to keep the region’s roads safe.
