Police nab two over firearm possession

The Kaneshie Divisional Police Command has taken two men into custody after intercepting them with a firearm, ammunition, and other items. This was during a routine patrol around the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, a busy transport hub in Accra.
Police sources said the arrest followed days of surveillance and patrols in response to security concerns in the area. The suspects were picked up on Saturday, December 20, 2025, after officers stopped a motorbike that had earlier drawn attention during a separate patrol.
According to the police, the two men were riding a Royal motorbike with a faded number plate when they were intercepted. The suspects were later identified as Kwame Boahen, a 35-year-old pillion rider, and Fatau Alhassan, a 52-year-old commercial motorbike rider, popularly known as an “okada” rider.
The police explained that the arrest was linked to an incident the previous day, Friday, December 19, 2025, when officers on patrol at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle attempted to stop the same motorbike for a routine check. Upon sighting the police, the riders allegedly abandoned the motorbike and fled the scene.
A brief chase ensued, and although the suspects reportedly resisted arrest, officers managed to apprehend them. A search conducted on the suspects led to the recovery of a pistol bearing the serial number 39363, with the inscription “CS HEAND SUH,” along with seventy-two rounds of ammunition.
In addition to the weapon and ammunition, the police retrieved several personal items believed to be connected to ongoing investigations. These included four mobile phones—an iPhone, an LG smartphone, a Blackberry device and a keypad phone—as well as two wristwatches. All recovered items have since been retained as exhibits.
The suspects have been cautioned and are currently in police custody, where they are assisting with investigations. Police say efforts are underway to establish the source of the firearm and ammunition and to determine whether the suspects are linked to any other criminal activities in the capital. Investigators are also working to trace the owners of the recovered mobile phones.
The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to intensifying patrols and intelligence-led operations across the metropolis, particularly in high-traffic areas such as Circle. The Command has also appealed to members of the public to support the police by volunteering timely and credible information to help prevent crime.
They stressed that such cooperation remains critical to maintaining public safety and ensuring that individuals involved in unlawful activities are promptly identified and dealt with in accordance with the law.
