Tamale Technical University Hospital closed for violating safety standards
The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has ordered the immediate closure of the Tamale Technical University Hospital after uncovering severe safety lapses and breaches of regulatory standards.
According to a public notice issued on November 10, 2025, the agency cited intelligence reports supported by video footage and photographs showing that healthcare delivery at the facility occurred under “highly compromised safety and infection prevention standards.”
HeFRA said its Compliance and Enforcement Directorate corroborated the findings during a visit to the hospital on Monday, November 3.
The inspection revealed that the hospital had also been operating with an expired licence, posing serious risks to public health and safety.
“The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency hereby directs the immediate closure of the facility on Friday, 7th November 2025,” the statement ordered. “The facility remains closed until recommendations meant to address safety gaps and infection prevention challenges are fully addressed.”
The acting Registrar of HeFRA, Dr Winfred Korletey Baah, further announced an administrative fine of GH¢35,000 against the hospital for regulatory violations.
He directed management to “take expeditious steps to regularize its licensing status with the Agency” and to uphold the highest standards of safety in patient care.
HeFRA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health through the enforcement of quality healthcare standards nationwide.
“The Agency remains committed to ensuring the safety of the public through the provision of quality healthcare services,” the statement said.
HeFRA was established under the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829) to license and monitor both public and private healthcare facilities in Ghana.
Its mandate includes assessing the adequacy and standard of healthcare delivery in line with safety and infection control protocols.
The shutdown of the Tamale Technical University Hospital is among several enforcement actions HeFRA has taken in recent years to strengthen compliance within Ghana’s health sector.
