Mahama’s rising popularity gives NPP sleepless nights – Suhuyini

Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, says the growing popularity of President John Dramani Mahama is increasingly unsettling the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, which was monitored by Today.com.gh, Mr Suhuyini argued that public approval of the President’s leadership and policy direction has been rising steadily, creating discomfort within the ranks of the NPP. “Yes, the popularity of the President is growing by the day, and it is giving the NPP sleepless nights,” he stated.
According to the Deputy Minister, the trend reflects broad-based public confidence in the government’s performance rather than mere political sentiment. He attributed the growing support to what he described as citizens’ endorsement of the administration’s approach to governance, including its engagement with the public and responsiveness to national concerns.
Mr Suhuyini suggested that the opposition may have anticipated a different political climate but has been taken aback by the pace at which President Mahama’s appeal is expanding. “I think it is so because they probably would have liked to take advantage of such growing popularity,” he said, indicating that the NPP’s political calculations appear to have been undermined by current developments.
He explained that the President’s rising popularity goes beyond opinion polls or partisan narratives, noting that it is shaped by how Ghanaians perceive leadership style, policy choices, and the government’s interaction with citizens across the country. In his view, these factors collectively influence public trust and approval.
The Tamale North MP further urged members of the governing party and its supporters to remain focused on delivery and outcomes, stressing that sustained public confidence depends on actions rather than rhetoric. He cautioned against complacency, noting that popularity must be reinforced by consistent performance.
Mr Suhuyini maintained that effective governance and service delivery remain the most reliable means of consolidating public support. He said party communicators and government officials should prioritize clear engagement with citizens while ensuring that policies translate into tangible benefits.
He added that enduring political goodwill is built through accountability, responsiveness, and visible progress, rather than political messaging alone. According to him, maintaining this trajectory requires discipline and continued commitment to national development objectives.
The comments come amid ongoing political debates over public sentiment toward the current administration and the opposition’s readiness ahead of future electoral contests. Mr Suhuyini’s remarks underscore the governing party’s confidence that the President’s growing appeal reflects deeper public approval of leadership and direction.
He concluded by calling on party faithful to channel the current momentum into sustained performance, emphasizing that public trust is earned through results that improve the lives of citizens.
