The Netherlands and Japan shared the spoils in a pulsating 2-2 draw in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Texas.
The highly anticipated encounter at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington on June 14 delivered a dramatic second-half spectacle, with all four goals arriving after the break as both sides showcased their quality and resilience.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, with Japan’s disciplined defensive setup frustrating the Dutch attack and limiting clear-cut opportunities. Despite enjoying more possession, the Netherlands struggled to break down the well-organised Samurai Blue, leaving the match goalless at halftime.
The breakthrough eventually came six minutes into the second half when Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to head home a precise cross from Ryan Gravenberch. The Liverpool defender directed a trademark header into the far corner to give the Dutch a deserved lead.
Japan responded swiftly and drew level in the 57th minute through Keito Nakamura. The forward wriggled free inside the penalty area before firing a low strike that took a slight deflection and beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The Dutch regained control seven minutes later thanks to a moment of brilliance from Crysencio Summerville. The West Ham winger curled a stunning long-range effort off the far post and into the net to restore his side’s advantage.
However, Japan refused to surrender and continued to press forward in search of another equaliser. Their persistence paid off in the 88th minute when Daichi Kamada redirected a corner kick from Koki Ogawa into the net, sparking celebrations among the Japanese supporters.
The late goal ensured both nations secured a valuable point to begin their Group F campaign and remain firmly in contention to advance to the knockout stage.
Speaking through their performances, both teams demonstrated why they are considered strong contenders in the group, with the Netherlands displaying attacking flair while Japan showcased determination and tactical discipline.
Attention now shifts to the next round of fixtures. The Netherlands will travel to Houston to face Sweden, while Japan will head to Monterrey to take on Tunisia in another crucial Group F encounter.
