Bryan Acheampong criticizes NPP’s decision to boycott Tamale Central by-election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and Abetifi MP, Bryan Acheampong, has criticised the party’s decision to boycott the September 30 Tamale Central by-election.
He described the move as a mistake, insisting the party should have contested the seat.
In a video from a recent campaign event, the MP described the National Steering Committee’s decision to withdraw from the contest as a “wrong move,” stressing that the party should not allow emotions to influence critical political strategies.
“We sometimes let our emotions take over when making political decisions,” he said in Twi. “If it were up to me, I would have contested Tamale. A by-election is a by-election. We should have been part of it.”
Acheampong further compared the NPP’s position to that of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has decided to fully contest the Akwatia by-election under similar circumstances.
“The NDC is showing us the way. They don’t allow emotions to control their political strategies,” he added, urging party members to remain focused on winning power rather than making sentimental decisions.
The NPP announced on August 11, 2025, that it would not take part in the Tamale Central by-election following the tragic death of the constituency’s MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.
According to the party, the decision was taken out of respect for the late MP and to “ensure a smooth and peaceful replacement” for the people of Tamale Central.
The by-election is expected to draw significant attention as the NDC, which currently holds the seat, prepares to defend it while other opposition parties weigh their options.
