Asiedu Nketia, Afenyo-Markin lead bipartisan eulogy to late Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II

National Democratic Congress Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin have led bipartisan tributes to the late Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II following his death on Monday.
Political leaders across party lines joined traditional authorities and Ghanaians in mourning the Overlord of Dagbon, whose passing has drawn widespread recognition for his leadership, commitment to peace and service to the kingdom.
In a message shared on X, Asiedu Nketia described the late monarch as “a great tree” whose death marks a significant loss for Dagbon and the nation.
“A great tree has fallen in Dagbon. Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari Gariba II occupied the Skin the way true leaders do: with dignity, wisdom, and a presence that commanded peace,” he wrote.
He extended condolences to the immediate family, chiefs, elders and the people of Dagbon, praying that the “Lion of Gbewaa” rests in perfect peace.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also paid tribute to the late ruler, describing him as a distinguished traditional leader whose legacy of peace and unity would endure.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Royal Majesty, Ya-Na Abukari II, Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom. Ghana has lost a distinguished traditional ruler whose wisdom, leadership and unwavering commitment to peace and unity will be remembered for generations,” he stated.
Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, joined the national outpouring of grief, describing the late Yaa Naa as a courageous and fair ruler who served Dagbon and Ghana with grace and loyalty.
She said his life reflected the strength and determination of the Dagbon people and expressed condolences on behalf of her family.
Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah described the late monarch as a cherished father figure and a fountain of wisdom whose counsel inspired many.
He said the Yaa Naa’s commitment to peace, unity and national progress formed the foundation of his reign and prayed for Allah to grant him the highest ranks of Jannah.
President John Dramani Mahama had earlier described the Yaa Naa’s death as a national tragedy, praising his role in bringing healing, reconciliation and lasting peace to Dagbon after years of conflict.
Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II died on Monday, July 13, and was buried in accordance with Dagbon customs after traditional rites at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi. Traditional authorities are expected to announce the succession process after the completion of funeral rites.
