Mahama consoles Dagbon over Yaa Naa’s passing

President John Dramani Mahama has extended condolences to the people of Dagbon following the death of Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, describing the loss as a national tragedy.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, July 13, President Mahama said the government received the news of the passing of the Dagbon overlord with profound sadness and joined the people of the kingdom in mourning.
On behalf of the government, the President expressed sympathy to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and the nation, acknowledging the immense grief caused by the revered traditional ruler’s passing.
“The Government of Ghana has received with profound sadness the news of the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.”
He added: “On behalf of the Government of Ghana, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama extends his deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and the entire nation during this period of immense grief.”
President Mahama paid tribute to the late Ya-Na, praising his leadership and the role he played in restoring stability to Dagbon after years of conflict.
“His Majesty will be remembered as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign brought healing, reconciliation, and lasting peace to Dagbon following years of conflict.”
The President further noted that the late king’s dedication to unity and development strengthened collaboration between traditional authorities and the government.
“His unwavering commitment to unity, stability, and the welfare of his people created an enabling environment for development and strengthened the enduring partnership between the traditional authorities and the Government.”
The statement concluded with prayers for the repose of the late monarch’s soul and recognition of his enduring legacy of peace and service.
The Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ya-Na Abukari II, died on Monday, July 13. His passing was announced by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, after customary rites were performed at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
Following the traditional sounding of the talking drum and other customary rituals, the late Ya-Na was buried in accordance with Dagbon customs.
Traditional authorities are expected to announce the succession process after the completion of the funeral rites.
