Awutu Mampong: 19-year-old Okada rider shot dead, two suspects lynched

A 19-year-old commercial motorbike rider, Kofi Mensah, has been killed in what authorities believe was a robbery attack at Awutu Mampong in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The incident triggered widespread anger in nearby communities after two suspects linked to the attack were later arrested and lynched by an irate mob.
Kofi Mensah, who recently completed Senior High School, had taken up work as an Okada rider to raise funds to further his education. Information gathered from local sources indicates that the young rider picked up two men who hired him for a trip from Awutu Mampong toward Agona Mankrong.
According to reports, barely five minutes into the ride, one of the passengers asked Kofi to pull over, claiming he needed to relieve himself. When the rider stopped, the situation allegedly turned into a robbery attempt. The attackers are said to have demanded the keys to the motorbike and threatened to kill him if he refused.
Sources say Kofi attempted to negotiate with the assailants, offering them his mobile phone and the money he had earned for the day. He reportedly explained that the motorbike was being operated under a “work and pay” arrangement and did not belong to him. Despite his plea, the suspects allegedly shot him.
Assemblyman for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, Ishmael Odoom, told Adom News that the attackers went further, breaking the victim’s neck and tying his hands before escaping with the motorbike. His lifeless body was later spotted by a passing Okada rider, who raised an alarm that quickly mobilised colleagues in the area.
A search team traced the suspects to Agona Osedu, where they were apprehended. However, news of Kofi’s death spread rapidly, drawing an angry crowd of residents and fellow Okada riders to the scene. The suspects were reportedly attacked and lynched before security personnel could intervene.
All three bodies — the victim and the two lynched suspects — have been taken to the Agona Swedru Police Hospital morgue as police begin formal investigations into both the killing and the mob justice incident.
Assemblyman Odoom has appealed to Okada operators to exercise greater caution, especially when transporting unfamiliar passengers, to avoid similar tragedies.
