Constitutional review must be robust instrument for national progress – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called on all Ghanaians to actively participate in the constitution review process, aiming to refine the country’s constitutional framework and address emerging national and global challenges.
Speaking at Ghana’s 68th independence anniversary celebration at the Jubilee House, President Mahama acknowledged previous efforts to review the constitution, initiated by late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2010 and continued by the subsequent administration under Nana Akufo-Addo.
According to President Mahama, despite these reforms, the constitution still has flaws and loopholes. “Like any enduring legal and political framework, it has flaws and loopholes,” he said. To address this, he has constituted a new review committee to undertake a comprehensive reassessment of the Constitution.
“I have constituted a new review committee to undertake a comprehensive and inclusive reassessment of our Constitution,” President Mahama announced. He urged all Ghanaians to submit their recommendations and memoranda to the committee, emphasizing that this is an opportunity to ensure the constitutional framework reflects the collective aspirations of the Ghanaian people.
The new review committee is expected to engage with various stakeholders and the public to gather input and ensure a comprehensive reassessment of the Constitution. As President Mahama stated, “This is an opportunity to ensure that our constitutional framework truly reflects the collective aspirations of the Ghanaian people and serves as a robust instrument for national progress.”
In a related development, President Mahama recently met with the Constitution Review Committee, where they discussed proposed amendments to address contentious issues such as the election of local government leaders, salaries of top officials, and the dual role of parliamentarians as ministers.
