FSHS rots: Wesley Girls High School head prefect deserves applause – Dr. Apaak

The deputy ranking member on the Education Committee in Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak says the head prefect Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast deserves commendation for her boldness in exposing the rot in the school.
This follows the Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast facing challenging predicament, with numerous girls forced to sleep on the floor.
Why does the Wesley Girls High School head prefect deserve applause?
The Head Prefect and Headmistress in an speech attributed the school’s current challenging predicament, with numerous girls forced to sleep on the floor to overcrowding and congestion in the school.
During the recent speech and prize-giving day event, Girls’ Prefect Abena Benewah disclosed the school’s struggle with unsafe living conditions stemming from insufficient infrastructure.
She noted that the IT laboratory suffers from a severe shortage of computers, with only two functional PCs available to serve a student population exceeding 3,000.
In commenting on the exposé by the head prefect, the Builsa South lawmaker stated that have to be applauded for speaking truth to power.
“Finally, it took an SHS student, a teenager, to tell Akufo-Addo and his Education Minister, Hon. Yaw Adutwum, in the face, that the challenges facing the implementation of the FSHS policy are real.
“The Wesley Girls High School Girls’ Prefect, Abena Benewah, must be commended for speaking truth to power. As captured in the attached joyfm story,” Dr. Apaak stated.
She was spot on when she said among others that “Hundreds of girls are sleeping on the floor. This problem also pushes us to eat our meals in two batches …From the tiny inconveniences to the deep and large potholes which hinder our progress, we have learnt as a school to endure, but I ask myself must we suffer when we can take help?…The moment in which we gaze upon our sisters who must use plastic chairs in their classrooms and lack tables to comfortably write on cannot be put on hold”.

The Member of Parliament also stated that no one should think the students facing the challenges are unaware of the situation they are facing in their various schools across the country.
“Let no one foolishly think that secondary school students don’t know their rights and / or are oblivious to the obligations of the state to them.
“I can only imagine the discomfort Akufo-Addo and his Education Minister felt hearing the brutal truth they have been denying from a teenager.”
Meanwhile, Jeannette Ruby Siameh, the headmistress of Wesley Girls School, acknowledges the ongoing support from alumni but highlights persistent challenges facing the school.
She remarked that despite the school’s outward appearance of beauty and seemingly abundant facilities, appearances can be deceiving.
She emphasized, “All that glitters is not gold,” pointing to significant underlying needs.

Madam Ruby Siameh emphasized the urgent need for the completion of the new assembly hall and highlighted the absence of adequate transportation, including buses, as pressing issues.
Furthermore, she stressed the necessity for improvements in the school’s road networks, emphasizing the need for a proper facelift.
In response, President Akufo-Addo reassured the students and management of government support.
Additionally, he took the opportunity to criticize former President Mahama for questioning the validity of the WASSCE results achieved by Ghanaian students.
Labeling the comment as regrettable, President Akufo-Addo, serving as the special guest at the event, advised the 2024 flagbearer of the NDC to exercise greater caution in his statements.
