Mahama to launch “Accra Reset” initiative at UNGA 80

President John Dramani Mahama will this week launch a new global framework, The Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development, during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The initiative is being introduced by the President in his capacity as the African Union’s Champion for African Financial Institutions. It seeks to overhaul outdated international systems and create more effective approaches for tackling health and development challenges in an increasingly unpredictable world.
At the launch, President Mahama is expected to announce the establishment of a Global Presidential Council. This council will bring together Heads of State and Government from Africa, Asia, Latin America and other regions to guide the Reset’s vision and press for reform in global health and development governance.
A High-Level Advisory Panel will also be unveiled to support the effort. Comprising experts from health, finance, business, and technology, the panel will provide technical advice and ensure that the Reset produces practical and impactful results.
The call for the Accra Reset comes at a time when international confidence in development frameworks is waning. A 2023 United Nations review found that fewer than half of the Sustainable Development Goals remain on track, with setbacks recorded in global health, inequality, and financial stability. The initiative makes clear that “the era of development-as-usual is over,” and insists that international cooperation must adapt.
Health will be the first focus of the Reset, reflecting the sector’s vulnerability to global shocks. The initiative builds on commitments made at the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit held in Accra in August 2025, which emphasized stronger partnerships and more resilient health systems.
The launch is expected to attract world leaders, heads of multilateral organizations, the private sector, philanthropic foundations, and civil society groups.
Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has described the Accra Reset as “a timely and transformative step that redefines how nations cooperate to secure a more resilient future.”
