NPP Youth Organizers rally behind Kennedy Agyapong, not Bawumia — Philip Gyimah
Philip Gyimah, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team and Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, has dismissed claims that most youth organizers within the party support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He insists that the majority are firmly behind former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.
Speaking on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show with Bismark Brown (BB) which was keenly monitored by Today.com.gh, Mr. Gyimah, who also serves as a youth organizer in the Greater Accra Region, revealed that 18 youth organizers, 15 deputies, and several coordinators in the region have already declared their support for Agyapong.
According to him, Kennedy Agyapong carries a compelling message capable of inspiring the party’s base, whereas Dr. Bawumia relies on a network established during previous elections. Gyimah added that the Bawumia camp mistakenly assumes that former MPs who supported him in the past remain loyal, but many have since shifted their allegiance to Agyapong.
Gyimah also refuted claims that 490 youth organizers collected nomination forms for Dr. Bawumia on Wednesday, August 13. He alleged that fewer than 15 youth organizers were actually present, with the rest being TESCON members, arguing that the Bawumia camp deliberately created the impression that all attendees were youth organizers.
He concluded by asserting that the majority of NPP youth are eager for Kennedy Agyapong to lead the party, confident that he can secure victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.
Kennedy Agyapong, a former MP for Assin Central and a high-profile figure within the NPP, is positioning himself as a formidable contender for the party’s presidential ticket. Having secured 37.4% of the vote in the 2023 NPP presidential primaries, he came second to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. In early August 2025, Agyapong officially picked up his nomination forms to contest the upcoming primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
Dr. Bawumia, the former Vice President, has also picked his nomination forms, with some youth organizers within the party declaring their support for his candidacy. The intra-party contest has intensified focus on youth and grassroots mobilization, as both camps seek to consolidate support ahead of the primaries.
