Sammi Awuku backs NPP’s amnesty policy

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has endorsed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to grant amnesty to members who faced disciplinary sanctions. He described the move as a strategic effort to foster unity and strengthen the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Mr. Awuku explained that the move was not unprecedented, recalling a similar initiative during the tenure of former NPP National Chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, and the late General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (Sir John). According to him, the earlier amnesty helped reconcile estranged members and reintegrated them into the party’s fold.

“This is not the first time the NPP has granted amnesty. Under Jake Obetsebi Lamptey and Sir John, the party opened its doors to disgruntled members in order to restore unity. The current leadership is following that tradition by giving a fresh chance to those who have had issues with the party’s disciplinary committee,” he noted.

The Akuapem North legislator argued that the latest pardon underscores the party’s commitment to inclusiveness and reconciliation. He stressed that re-engaging members who may have previously fallen out with the party is key to strengthening its internal structures and boosting morale as it prepares for the next national polls.

Mr. Awuku made these remarks during an appearance on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show on Tuesday, August 19, where he emphasised that forgiveness and openness were essential for mobilising the grassroots.

His endorsement comes amid mixed reactions to the party’s decision. While many have commended the leadership for prioritising unity, some critics have raised concerns that blanket amnesty could embolden indiscipline, allowing members to act with impunity.

Mr. Awuku, however, dismissed such fears, insisting that the policy should be viewed as a reconciliatory tool rather than a loophole. “This is about healing and building synergy within the NPP, not about encouraging misconduct. The ultimate goal is to present a united front as we work toward victory in 2028,” he affirmed.
