Ghana to host 2027 U-20 AFCON after CAF approval

Ghana has secured the rights to host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations following approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The decision was formally communicated in a letter addressed to the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association, Lawyer Prosper Harrison Addo.
The hosting rights reflect CAF’s confidence in Ghana’s capacity to organise a tournament that meets the highest standards of youth football on the continent.
Ghana last hosted the competition in 1999, a memorable edition in which the Black Satellites lifted the trophy on home soil. The 2027 tournament is also expected to align with the country’s 70th Independence anniversary, adding further national significance to the event.
CAF indicated that it will work closely with the Ghana Football Association and a yet-to-be-constituted Local Organising Committee (LOC) to ensure smooth preparation and execution.
Planning efforts are expected to focus on key areas such as infrastructure, logistics, security and fan experience, with the aim of delivering a tournament that reflects the growing global appeal of African football.
Beyond hosting duties, the tournament is seen as a strong endorsement of Ghana’s standing as a leading football nation on the continent.
Over the years, the country has built a reputation for successfully organising major football events, supported by a vibrant fan base, improving sports infrastructure and a deep-rooted football culture.
The U-20 Africa Cup of Nations remains one of the most important youth competitions in world football, serving as a platform for emerging talents across the continent.
It has historically produced some of Africa’s finest players, many of whom have gone on to excel at top clubs in Europe and on the international stage.
With experience, history and strong local support, Ghana is expected to deliver a successful 2027 tournament that will not only celebrate the nation’s football heritage but also contribute to shaping the next generation of African stars.
