Haruna Mohammed confident EC will deliver a fair Akwatia by-election

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has expressed confidence in the Electoral Commission ahead of the Akwatia parliamentary by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025. The poll follows the death of the constituency’s MP, Ernest Kumi.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s “The Point of View” on Wednesday, August 20, and reported by Today.com.gh, Haruna Mohammed praised the EC for its long-standing track record of transparent and credible elections in Ghana.
“I have always trusted the Electoral Commission. They have successfully managed elections in the country over the years. The processes have always been open and transparent. I am confident they will deliver a free and fair by-election in Akwatia,” he said.
The by-election comes amid heightened political tensions, particularly following unrest during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, which saw isolated clashes and attacks on journalists. The incidents have raised concerns about security for voters, election officials, and media personnel in Akwatia.
In preparation, the EC has been coordinating with security agencies and civil society organisations to ensure that measures are in place to maintain peace during the upcoming poll. This includes deploying trained personnel to manage crowds, monitor activities, and prevent any potential disruptions on election day.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) that the police service is fully prepared to guarantee a peaceful voting process. Addressing the GJA leadership on Wednesday at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra, the IGP said approximately 6,000 police officers, trained at Huhunya, have been deployed to Akwatia to maintain law and order during the polls.
He also noted that intelligence reports had highlighted potential threats on social media, but reassured journalists and the public that the police are adequately prepared to prevent any disruptions. Those behind such threats, he added, are unlikely to act, describing them as “cowards.”
Yohuno further emphasised the partnership between the police and the media, urging journalists to cover the election confidently, knowing that their safety is a top priority. Authorities remain committed to ensuring that both voters and media personnel can participate in the by-election without fear or intimidation.
