Investing in STEAM Education is Investing in Ghana’s future – Dr. Apaak

The Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has stated that investing in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education is investing in Ghana’s future.
Speaking at the International Community College (ICC) STEAM Fair, the Deputy Minister highlighted the need for innovative teaching methodologies that emphasize interdisciplinary learning. “Traditional education often separates subjects into rigid categories, but real-world challenges require solutions that integrate knowledge across multiple disciplines,” he explained.
The Deputy Minister also stressed the importance of project-based learning, where students engage in hands-on, real-world projects that require them to apply concepts from multiple STEAM disciplines. He cited examples of robotics and environmental sustainability projects that incorporate engineering principles, coding, mathematical calculations, and creative design elements.
Collaboration between academia and industry is also crucial, according to the Deputy Minister. He emphasized the need for industry partnerships to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. “By fostering closer ties between educational institutions and businesses, we can ensure that students not only gain technical expertise but also develop the hands-on experience and professional skills necessary to excel in the workforce,” he said.
The government has demonstrated its commitment to STEAM education by formulating and implementing policies that support it. This includes funding for research, scholarships, and infrastructural development to create an enabling environment for learning and innovation.
As the Ghana Education Service (GES) has also emphasized, STEAM education is critical for Ghana’s development. The GES has commissioned the Accra High STEAM Centre, one of twenty STEAM centres being established across the country. These centres aim to improve STEAM education at the pre-tertiary level and create a pipeline of learners for STEM education at the tertiary level.
Investing in STEAM education is indeed investing in Ghana’s future. By empowering the youth with the skills and knowledge to excel in STEAM fields, Ghana can build a prosperous, innovative, and self-reliant nation.
