Nigeria to begin deportation of foreigners with expired visas

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced nationwide enforcement against foreigners with expired visas or violating immigration conditions, following the end of the visa amnesty programme.

The Federal Government’s amnesty, which began on July 5, 2025, allowed foreign nationals with lapsed documents to regularise their status without sanctions.

The window officially closed at midnight on September 30.

In a statement issued before the deadline, Service Public Relations Officer ACI Akinsola Akinlabi disclosed that enforcement operations would begin on October 1.

He explained that the exercise would target holders of expired Visa on Arrival, short visit and business visas, as well as individuals with invalid Comprehensive Expatriate Residence Permits and Automated Cards (CERPAC).

Foreign nationals found to be in breach will face sanctions ranging from deportation to penalties or entry restrictions.

“Less than three months’ violation attracts removal, payment of $15 per day, or a two-year entry ban,” the statement said.

It added: “Three months to one year: removal, payment of $15 per day, or a five-year entry ban. One year and above: removal and a 10-year or permanent entry ban.”

The Service stressed that the action seeks to strengthen lawful migration, safeguard national security, and reinforce transparency in Nigeria’s immigration system.

According to the NIS, the expiration of the amnesty signals a renewed commitment to orderly migration and accountability in the country’s border management.

Foreign nationals still in doubt about their legal status may seek clarification at immigration offices to avoid facing the outlined penalties.

The clampdown, the Service emphasised, is part of efforts to balance Nigeria’s openness to foreign investment and skilled labour with the need to ensure compliance with immigration laws.

In recent years, Nigeria has stepped up deportation exercises as part of its immigration enforcement.

In 2019, the Nigerian Immigration Service deported over 50 foreigners for immigration-related offences, including visa violations and illegal stay.

Similar crackdowns have been carried out periodically, often targeting individuals involved in irregular migration or those considered security risks.
