I’m not the cause of NPP 2024 defeat: Dr. Bawumia runs away from failure tag

Former flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says the Mike Ocquaye report – a fact-finding document explaining the party’s loss in the December 2024 polls – has affirmed that he was not the reason the party was unsuccessful in the polls.
Speaking to party faithful on a campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, the ex-vice-president cited two other reports that did not single him out for causing the party’s historic defeat.
He said in spite of these findings, the gossips were still bent on blaming the defeat on him.
“We all know because the [Mike] Ocquaye report was clear that the loss was not occasioned by the presidential candidate. ‘It is not the fault of Dr. Bawumia,’ it’s there in black and white. It wasn’t because he was a Northerner or a Muslim.
“The Kyei-Mensah report in Ashanti also reached the same conclusion. Conrad Adenauer Foundation, the same thing. However, the gossips still maintain that it was Dr. Bawumia who caused it,” he said at his campaign event.
He rejected the idea that he lost because he was Muslim, saying that if that had been the case, he would not have won the NPP presidential primaries.
Dr. Bawumia explained that the data had revealed he won more votes than most of the Christian parliamentary candidates on the NPP’s ticket.
The Mike Ocquaye Committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, was tasked with conducting a post-election review following the NPP’s loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the December 2024 elections.
Following its submission, the party elected to keep its findings under wraps.
Meanwhile, the former Minister of Trade and Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, KT Hammond, has taken a swipe at New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants who flaunt their wealth and exaggerate their financial contributions to the party.
Speaking to party supporters on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, in Adansi Asokwa, during Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s tour of the Ashanti Region, KT Hammond described such aspirants as “latter-day braggarts.” He questioned where they were in the 1990s when sacrifices were needed to build the NPP into a formidable political force.
“When we wanted money to build the party, where were all these people who are now bragging and insulting all of us with their money?” KT Hammond asked.
The outspoken former MP emphasized that most party members struggling financially sympathize with and support Dr. Bawumia to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections.

If they want to turn this party into the rich versus the poor, then we want to tell them that we, the poor, who are in the majority, are for Dr. Bawumia,” he declared.
