Julius Debrah is the kind we need to build society – Captain Smart

Broadcast journalist Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has described Chief of Staff Julius Debrah as a “wise” leader fit for Ghana’s presidency.
In a promotional video released Monday, Captain Smart recounted his first encounter with Julius Debrah in 2015, following a critical report he had produced against the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I met him somewhere in 2015. I had done a big story against the National Democratic Congress. When I was told he wanted to meet me I assumed he was going to argue with me,” he said.
“Honestly, I met a gentleman, a father, someone who is critical in thinking and wise. These are the people we need to build the society we are all looking for,” he added.
The comments form part of what appears to be an endorsement of Mr. Debrah’s potential presidential ambition ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Julius Debrah is currently serving his second term as Chief of Staff, having previously held the same position between 2014 and 2017 under the first administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
Recent political discussions and opinion polls have placed Mr. Debrah among the leading contenders to succeed President Mahama as the NDC’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
His growing profile within the party and government has fueled speculation about his political future, particularly as the NDC prepares for a transition beyond its current leadership.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has already taken steps to maintain continuity, with delegates in January retaining former presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flag bearer for the next election cycle.
The 2028 presidential race is expected to mark a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape, as it will be the first time since 2008 that a sitting president will not be seeking re-election.
With early endorsements and internal party dynamics beginning to take shape, both major political parties are positioning themselves for what could become a highly competitive contest.
