NDC focused on delivering promises, not 2028 flagbearer race – Suhuyini
Lawyer and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communicator, Hamza Suhuyini, says the party is focused on fulfilling its campaign promises to Ghanaians rather than engaging in premature discussions about who will lead it into the 2028 general elections.
He emphasized that the government’s attention is firmly on governance and delivering results.
Speaking on Citi FM’s The Big Issue on Saturday, October 4, Mr. Suhuyini said all NDC members, including President John Dramani Mahama, must prioritize implementing policies that improve the lives of citizens instead of being distracted by internal political contests.
“For us in the NDC, I think that the objective now is to stay true to the social contract that we signed with the good people of this country and based on which they gave us an overwhelming mandate on the 7th of December 2024,” he said. “That should be the focus of any operative of the NDC, and of course His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.”
His comments follow growing discussions within political circles about who might succeed President Mahama as the NDC’s next presidential candidate. The speculation has been fueled by several opinion polls conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, which have ranked potential contenders.
The latest poll indicates that Minister of Education and Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, is currently the preferred choice of delegates, securing 30% of support among respondents. He is followed by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, with 24%, and Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson, with 18%.
Other names that appeared in the survey include Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who shared the remaining percentage points.
However, some senior members of the party have criticized the frequent polling, warning that it could derail the NDC’s focus on governance and sow unnecessary division within its ranks.
Mr. Suhuyini reiterated that the NDC’s mandate is clear—to deliver on the promises that earned the trust of Ghanaians. “That’s where our energy must go,” he said, “into building a stronger, fairer, and more prosperous Ghana.”
