Don’t reject me over dislike for my campaign allies – Bawumia

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged delegates and supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to reject him based on their dislike for his campaign allies.
Speaking at a campaign event on Monday, he appealed to the party loyalists to remain solely focused on his personality and candidacy as an aspiring flag bearer of the NPP.
“I want you all to understand that I’m the one on the ballot and not another person so if you find someone in my campaign annoying, don’t allow your dislike for them to affect. You and I have no issues whatsoever. We have no issues at all,” the former vice president said passionately.
He continued: “Don’t allow them to affect my candidacy with their problems. You and I have no problems. If you vote for me, I’ll help you so please don’t allow other people’s conduct to hurt me.”
Dr. Bawumia’s appeal comes at a time when political commentators and observers are conducting various studies into the reason he suffered a historic loss in last year’s presidential election.
The vice-president is seeking his party’s candidacy for the second time and has been crisscrossing the country meeting NPP delegates. The primaries have been scheduled for January 2026.
The aspiring candidates include former MP for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong; MP for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong; MP for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Adutwum and former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
Meanwhile, the party has reiterated its commitment to upholding internal democracy and fairness, promising to issue clear guidelines and protocols for the conduct of the upcoming primaries.
The NPP said its early congress was a strategic decision aimed at repositioning and strengthening the party for the next general elections, not to advance the ambitions of any individual.
Despite this explanation, some party bigwigs including the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, well-known as Wontumi has claimed that the party’s decision to hold the elections in January 2026 is aimed at favouring former Vice President Dr. Bawumia.
The party has issued a strong statement denying the allegation.
