NPP drags EC to court over rerun of 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will commence legal action to restrain the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting a rerun in some polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
This follows the EC’s announcement that it will conduct a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the constituency, citing disputes over the authenticity of the December 7, 2024, election results.
Addressing a press briefing in Accra on July 3, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, argued that the EC lacks the legal basis to call for a rerun in only selected polling stations and said the party will take the matter to court.
“The NDC knows that they lost the election. We are in the NPP, shall stop at nothing in our quest to ensure that the power that has been respected and upheld by the democratic rights and sovereign will of the people of Ablekuma North, as expressed by them on December 7, 2024, is upheld. Therefore, we have caused our legal directorate to challenge the directive in court. We shall file in court and challenge the whimsical, capricious directive by the EC,” he said.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has decided to rerun the parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency in Accra in 19 polling stations.
The commission has announced that the rerun will be done on Friday, July 11, 2025.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations at the EC, Samuel Tettey, said the decision was reached after extended discussions with representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The parties remained divided for months despite several meetings.
The most recent round of talks took place on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, following earlier engagements, including a session on June 12.
The dispute centred on 37 pink sheets submitted by the NPP during the collation process. The NDC questioned the authenticity of the scanned copies and called for a rerun in all 37 polling stations. The NPP, however, insisted that 34 of the pink sheets had already been validated, and only three were outstanding.
